Formerly St. Paul Championship Wrestling, had its very first event on January 17, 1998. Without TV exposure the debut show drew approximately 600 fans, thanks to former AWA Champion and WWE Hall of Fame inductee Nick Bockwinkel.
Bockwinkel has served as an advisor to the group. He was instrumental in helping draw the large crowd, by going on KFAN radio on the Jesse Ventura radio program and introducing St. Paul Championship wrestling to the fans of the Twin Cities. From 1999 through 2000, SPCW has thrilled wrestling fans by presenting to the area some of the best wrestling it has seen since the AWA days.
In January 2001, St. Paul Championship Wrestling changed its name to Steel Domain Wrestling (SDW). The reason for the name change was to make the company sound less "regional", as the prospect of broadcast television arose. SDW's Twin Cities Ringside aired for 4 years on KSTC channel 45, it was the first local TV Wrestling programming since the AWA's All Star Wrestling show.
The voice of SDW is "Slick" Mick Karch. Karch's name is synonymous with both Minnesota wrestling and SDW. Mick was the voice of Vern Gagne's AWA TV during its ESPN days.
Mick was the host of Steel Domain Wrestling’s weekly television program, which began airing in October of 2001 and continued until October 2005.
